GODSTOMPER - Anarchy U.S.A. (2008)

19-04-2008 / Breakcore, Hardcore

OKAY! I don't think too many of the usual gabbernauts on this site will know of GODSTOMPER and their previous 10+ year history as a 2-man GRINDCORE band...FEAR NOT, this release (which may very well be their swan song) is like a completely fucking retarded CHEMICAL BROTHERS/ATARI TEENAGE RIOT if CB and ATR had...um...Casio keyboards for a drum machine and 4k of ram more than the earliest Bloody Fist releases. Ultratalented? FUCK NO!!!

Anarchy USA is the latest and most experimental release by West Coast underground grindcore band GODSTOMPER, released on the Damaging Noise label on April 14, 2008. The partly fictional memoir electronica/noise album marks a brief period of rest from the usual distorted bass guitar and pulsating d-beat style drums, continuing the band's aesthetic to a DIY attitude toward music.
According to an online source, Anarchism is a philosophy which embodies many diverse and heterogeneous attitudes, tendencies and schools of thought; as such, disagreement over questions of values, ideology and tactics is common. The GS release is questionable and reverberates another Anti-authoritarian approach to this bands traditional two-man style of hardcore music. This contribution will be the first time that GODSTOMPER has produced music without their traditional drums and bass guitar. The album was recorded at GODSTOMPER's Sunnyvale studio (mainly in Paulbarfo's office) in lengthy stages between 1994 and 2008. The album has singing rather than the singers yelling voice. The styles range between hip-hop, rhythm and blues, melancholy soft rock, electronic drum and bass, pop-noise, ambient noise and structured industrial noise. The album is being released completely via internet download (although there is a rumor that it may be released as a limited LP at a future date).
GODSTOMPER was signed to other labels by Sean Hogan in previous releases. The band has had good relations with Hogan since its' debut in the late 1990's. The first tracks recorded include the album's enveloping rising tones (including the instrumental track 'Somebody's Home' ) . In this session, GODSTOMPER is demonstrating a collage of tension surfacing as a result of a heated confrontation. When drummer Daniel666 recorded the track, it was eventually mastered backward despite the vocals already layered into the track. The peak tones were lowered substantially to eliminate the eardrum-piercing climaxes. The rain was sampled to create a monotonous effect throughout the track.
The lyrics to 'Meaning Less' tend to deal with feelings toward reaching out to its listeners on the internet via online chat, blogs, community pages and other communications devices. GODSTOMPER manages to keep in touch with the underground punk scene through myspace (see http://www.myspace.com/godstompper). GODSTOMPER described the release as an 'Evolve or die' approach. Obscurely, the track contains a depiction of the band's effort to keep friendships, uniting various outside communities, rather than solely limiting itself to a particular group. This is contrary to the traditional lyrics for the band, whose lyrics tend to reach out to angered youth, condemning the groups of people who have infiltrated, destroyed or betrayed the community's pursuit to truth, evolution and self-worth. In previous works, GODSTOMPERs attack on emo attitudes and jock bullying solidified their angst to keep the punk movement underground yet united. Herein, the song ends with 'Not see me... but see me', which depicts the band's attempt to befriend those who may or may not understand where they are coming from.
While Bass Guitarist Paulbarfo is commonly associated with the production of this album (and acts as the albums co-pilot), most of it was provided by Drummer Daniel666. Barfo let his younger brother create and select all of the 12 tracks. The production is mainly synth-based with samples varying from the percussion of digital drums to the raw acoustic keys of a natural piano (including electronic piano taken from his home). 'Cuz I Luv U' was recorded on a boom box in a bedroom and eventually mastered 10 years later.
One track is ambient 'Somebody's Home'. Three tracks are digital punk 'Sick Of You!', 'Just A Punk' and '666ESP' in bitter and angry depiction of 'the phenomenal inner strength of negative feelings'. Some of the tracks carry a more familiar commercial sound as a result of inspiration from the band's personal styles 'Meaning Less', 'Whore' and 'VS'. One track is a piano-laced balled 'I Miss You' which deals with separation and loss. Anarchy USA was mastered in 2007 and released in 2008, with two additional bonus tracks to follow in 2009.
